Abstract:
Background and purpose: Cancer is one of the most important health problems in the whole world. One of the most important modifiable risk factors in lifestyle is diet. The role of diet in gastrointestinal malignancies is very important, therefore, it is crucial to identify the high-risk diet in areas with high prevalence of gastrointestinal cancers, especially in the north of the country. This study identified the inflammatory potential of diet in patients referred to Mazandaran Comprehensive Cancer Center compared to the control group.
Materials and methods: this was a case-control study and included 155 subjects of 77 patients with colorectal cancer referred to Imam Khomeini Hospital, Sari, and 78 controls from the patient's companions, without gastrointestinal symptoms and previous history of cancer during 2022. They were randomly selected based on the inclusion/ exclusion criteria for age and gender. Food frequency and demographic data were recorded based on a questionnaire and statistical analysis was done with SPSS software and P<0.05.
Findings: frequency of pro-inflammatory food consumption was not statistically different. In anti-inflammatory category, Control subjects used more vegetable than CRC patients.
